My partner had a total of 16000pounds in student loans when she left university. As she only earns 24000 a year her payments hardly cover the interest so she now owes 19000 after leaving uni 5 years ago. they are just going to keep increasing. she says it doesnt matter as she wont have to pay them back fully unless shes earnig enough which i know. but, when we get married do her student loan debts become my problem too, if she passed away would they then come to me?

Yes and no. It will not hurt your credit score, it will hurt hers. If she were to *knock on wood* pass away, there was a law that I'm not too sure is still around that her student debt will not be your issue. When you two are married, since you share income, they will start to want to collect from her more and more so beware of that.

The bells should be ringing by now. The cavalier way she regards her debt is a bit worrying. She`s responsible for her debt, it`s in her name, but in marriage, the bailiffs reckon the telly, video, anything of value is their`s. She needs to be showing you how she regards the paying back of monies, not sweeping it under the carpet, it won`t go away, it will only get worse. Debt causes arguments, if your concerned now, think what it could be like, a couple of years down the road. Have a serious talk with her, maybe delaying the marriage proposal a little longer, could be a good idea.
