Last week I lost my credit card and ordered a new one. It arrived today with a new 16 digit account number on the front of the card.

I always pay my credit card bill using my Internet banking. My bank is the Halifax. I had to set up a new online payment because of the new account number. In order for the credit card company to know where the payment is coming from you have to enter the 16 digit card number as the Reference for the payment.

I have made a huge mistake, because when I entered the 16 digit reference number for my payment of £150.00 to the card company I accidentally missed out the very last digit. So my payment went to

1234 1234 1234 123 instead of 1234 1234 1234 1234
above is an example of my card number.

Is there any way the bank or the credit card company will be able to trace that £150.00? I have just phones them and they are closed until 8am tomorrow morning. Please tell me what the chances are of the payment being traced and paid into the correct account.
Yes £150,00 has been deducted from my account

They can also look it up by name. If they don't want to bother, the payment will be rejected and your bank account will be credited. Nothing is going to happen that you can change anyway before tomorrow, so call them then.

Note: the first 15 digits are the unique account number. The last is a check digit.

They may be able to look it up by your name and address (which usually prints on bill pay checks), but if not it will go into a suspension account on their end since that probably does not match any account number they have on file. Call them as soon as they open tomorrow morning anyway and explain the situation. It is easily fixable and there is no need to panic.

Also, be sure to update your bill pay info if you haven't done so already.

There is very little chance your payment will be credited at all - all those numbers are required. Check your account online to see if 150 has been taken out. If not, go ahead and re-enter the information again, this time using all the numbers.

Don't worry, there is no 1234 1234 1234 123 as there are not enough digits, they will spot this.

Call them monday
