...in his car in his garage with the? ignition turned on, drinking and listening to cd's until he went to sleep, and never woke up.
Is this really possible with today's modern environmentally cars with catalytic converters fitted?

Yes even in today's modern friendly and health and safety ruled world people still continue to die!
Even if they don't want to.

Actually, too much of any gas would kill you. I think I am right in saying if the atmosphere changed to just oxygen tomorrow we wouldn't survive.

Therefore sitting in a confined space which is filling up with a gas would kill you. This includes carbon dioxide.

Cars still emit gases even with a cat fitted.

Happened to somebody I knew. Fell asleep in his closed garage with his late model jeep's engine running ( transmission in park). He was drunk. Late at night. He never woke up. Occurred in Waterford, Michigan about 4 - 5 years ago. Carbon monoxide poisoning was cause of death.

Yes, because CATs (catalytic converters) convert CO into CO2 (among other things), which can still kill you easily.
